1.  March 10 Dance:  Our next dance will be held in the Spanish Ballroom on Sunday afternoon March 10 featuring the ever-popular Mike Surratt Trio.  Mike has been Ballroom Time's inspiration and mentor and I've received many questions of the nature, "When is Mike coming back?".  We anticipate a big turnout so don't miss this one.  Beginner lesson at 2:45 and the live music starts at 3:30 and goes until 6:00 pm.  We're planning a mixer or two, a beautiful showcase, and a line dance.  Many singles attend our events and all are welcome.  $15 at the door, full details are here: https://ballroomtime.org/March.html

2.  May 18 Dinner and Gala Fundraiser:  In support of social dance programs, Ballroom Time will again host a table at the Glen Echo Park annual gala fundraiser and dance.  If you would like to sit at our table to promote ballroom dancing in the Park, please send us a message preferably before March 9.  Note that you'll make your donation directly to the Park (GEPPAC, Inc) not Ballroom Time.   Donations are partially tax-deductible, and some early-bird tickets remain.  Full details are here: https://givebutter.com/c/boogieintheballroom

3.  March 7 - April 11 Class Series:  Our Thursday evening ABC's Class Series for ballroom beginners starts one week from today.  Classes are held in the Spanish Ballroom, run from 6:30 to 7:30, and cover the basic step figures used in Slow Waltz, Foxtrot, Ballroom Tango, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, Rumba, Bachata, Cha-Cha, Samba, Mambo and Swing/Jive.  Topics include leading and following techniques and ballroom etiquette with a goal of preparing students to dance at our monthly events. No partner is required.  Instructors are Tom Hall and Min Zhang with occasional guest instructors. Pre-registration is required by the Park, please click here to sign up:

https://reg126.imperisoft.com/glenechopark/Search/Registration.aspx

4.  Other events:  If you're not able to attend our Thursday evening class series, consider attending our March 16 Saturday afternoon ABC's Workshop from 2:00 to 4:30 also in the Spanish Ballroom.  Tickets are $15 at the door, no pre-registration is required.  Our dance in April will take place on Sunday afternoon April 14th and feature the return of Janet Paulsen with her sparkling vocals and her Trio ensemble.  In May we're planning a special Mother's Day dance on Sunday afternoon May 12 with the theme "Bring Mom to the Park".  Moms get in free that day if accompanied by one of their children who pays an admission.   We'll have special reserved seating on the floor for those Moms who don't want to dance themselves but would like to socialize, listen to the beautiful music of Djangolaya... and watch their children dance by ("Look Mom, two left feet! :-)". The Carousel will also be open. Please pre-register your Mom by sending just her first name to info@ballroomtime.org .  Then on May 26, the Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day Weekend, we're planning a very special dance to celebrate Ballroom Time's first birthday.  The Mike Surratt Trio will again be playing and it's shaping up to be quite a party.  Since we're turning ONE there will be a singular surprise for our dancers... to be announced.

Please mark your calendars and support ballroom dancing at Glen Echo Park.

See you soon at an upcoming event,

Ballroom Time invites you to our St. Valentine's Day themed dance in the Spanish Ballroom tomorrow afternoon.

A variety of popular love songs will be performed by the Djangolaya Quartet featuring the romantic vocals of Jeanine Greene.  Slow waltzes... rumbas.... foxtrots.... cha-chas... tangos... swing and more.  We'll also have pre-recorded music during the intermissions.  There will be lots of "love", "amour", "amor", "爱", "amore", and "Liebe" in the air... A large part of the fun is the opportunity to dance several different dance styles during the event.... and to practice and get better in the styles where one may be a little weaker.

beginner lesson in ballroom basics will start the event at 2:45.  The lesson will focus on waltz and samba.  Live music then begins at 3:30 and goes until 6:00.  There will be two 10-minute Ballroom Time mixers during the afternoon to promote social interaction. Dance as a couple or take a chance and let fate choose your partners. There will be an optional line dance or two.  Something for everyone.

The weather forecast says temperature in the low 50's, which is February-friendly for dancing in the historic Spanish Ballroom.  Admission is the same low price: $15 at the door; $5 for full-time students and active-duty military.  There's plenty of free parking.  Many singles attend Ballroom Time events and no partner is necessary.

Consider wearing something crimson to match the Ballroom Time logo and join us for the fun tomorrow afternoon.  AND if you haven't yet ordered your personalized Ballroom Time name tag featuring our logo, please do so now... just send an email to info@ballroomtime.org specifying your first name and whether you'd like pronouns listed.  Name tags are free thanks to a generous sponsor - our gift to you while supplies last.  Sample name tags can be seen at the bottom of our home page at www.ballroomtime.org... while you're there consider joining our Facebook and X groups by clicking on the links.

See you tomorrow on the dance floor!

To our e-mail list of supporters,

Our second Sunday Afternoon Dance is just two days away, and we invite you to join us.  The weather forecast is mid-40's and partly sunny, which is another way of saying, "ideal for dancing in the Spanish Ballroom".

Here are the details:

  • There will be a beginner lesson on ballroom basics at 2:45.  If you're a more experienced dancer please join us and help make newcomers feel welcome in the dance circle.
  • Live music by Some Assembly Quartet starts at 3:30 and goes to 6:00.  Some Assembly has had a lot of experience performing in the SBr, but this will be their first dance with Ballroom Time.  They've been working hard to get ready, and our dancers are in for a treat.
  • During the afternoon there will be two mixers, a samba line dance or two, and a dance demonstration lasting a few minutes.
  • Carl Pavetto will be our Master of Ceremonies.
  • Hot tea and light fare will be served in the reception area at the end of the dance to prepare you for the transition back to the outdoors.
  • Cost is $15 at the door (cash, check, CC, Zelle).  Cost is $5 for Full-Time Students and Active-Duty Military (Cash only).

Looking forward to our Sunday Afternoon dances in upcoming months:

  • Our February 11 dance will feature the Djangolaya Trio playing romantic Valentine's Day-themed music with "love", "amour" "amor" "Lieber" or comparable somewhere in the lyrics of every song.  Vocals by the incomparable Jeanine Greene.
  • Our March 10 dance will feature the return of the Mike Surratt Trio!  Mike has been the inspiration for Ballroom Time and needs no further introduction; we can't wait to dance to his music again.
  • Our April 14 dance will feature the return of Janet Paulsen who delighted us with her vocals last month.  She'll be performing Great American Songbook classics in a Trio ensemble.
  • On May 12 The Dajangolaya Trio returns for a special Mother's Day dance and we're planning a "Bring Mom to the Park" event, details to follow as we get closer to that date.
  • Mark your calendar for May 26... Ballroom Time is turning 1, and we're planning a Surprise Birthday Party Dance in the Spanish Ballroom featuring music by the Mike Surratt Trio.  We sure it's an event you're not going to want to miss.  "Surprises" to follow...

Wishing everyone a pleasant MLK Day weekend.  See you on Sunday afternoon.

Best wishes,

Tom Hall for

To our email list of supporters:

Our Second Sunday Afternoon ballroom dance on December 10 is shaping up to be a special holiday affair. Ballroom Time is giving dancers some extra presents under the tree. Here's the latest news:Our Second Sunday Afternoon ballroom dance on December 10 is shaping up to be a special holiday affair. Ballroom Time is giving dancers some extra presents under the tree. Here's the latest news:

Music will be provided by Go Figure! The group led by Janet Muse and Mike Dunn has previously performed in The Spanish Ballroom, and we love their music... Which - just for us - is going to feature vocals by Special Guest Star Janet Paulsen. Janet has headlined up and down the East Coast and was referred to us via GEPPAC and the Maryland Arts Council. She'll be singing holiday favorites along with standards from the Great American Songbook. Shhh... we sneaked a peek at the Playlist - it's going to be a festive time with a full spectrum of ballroom dance styles.... from Cha-cha to Foxtrot to Samba to Swing to Waltz and all the others in between.

AND that's not all. Ballroom Time is pleased to announce that Belinda and Paul are coming back for an encore! After hearing about the multiple medals they collected in front of a panel of 11 judges at the Ohio Star Ball – including a GOLD medal in Rumba – we couldn't resist extending another invitation. Belinda will be teaching the beginner lesson in Rumba (of course!) and Ballroom Tango, one-half hour of each. She and her student Paul will then perform a Rumba showcase at first intermission and lead us into a snowball mixer. It means our dancers will be able to get the foundational steps and movements in Rumba from a top expert during the beginner lesson... and then see what lessons and a little practice can accomplish building on that foundation into a gold-medal showcase. Fate and holiday magic will be at play and a lucky few will get to dance with the stars... or a special star, one never knows. So, don't miss your chance!   And if you haven't seen Belinda and Paul's Pasodoble showcase, please visit our Facebook page and look for the 2-part video in the album from our November dance. Especially part 2.  The FB link is available for your convenience on our home page at www.ballroomtime.org

So... music by Go Figure!... Special Guest Star Janet Paulsen on vocals... Belinda teaching... Belinda and Paul showcasing.   Along the way there will be mixers, a samba line dance, lots of general dancing, and no doubt a few other surprises. Ballroom Time friend and supporter Paul Tannous will be Master of Ceremonies for the occasion. The weather forecast says temperatures in the low 60's, which is ideal for dancing in The Spanish Ballroom. Please join us to hear beautiful music, to dance, and to celebrate the holiday season.

A 2-column flyer is attached to this message for printing and distribution to your dance friends.

Many singles attend Ballroom Time events. Everyone is invited.

See you this Sunday in The Spanish Ballroom!

COPY of the November 11, 2023 email update:

To our email list of supporters,

A reminder that our regular Second Sunday Afternoon Dance will take place tomorrow in the Spanish Ballroom.  Please join us and dance to the elegant music of the Djangolaya Trio featuring multi-lingual vocals by Jeanine Greene.  Music starts at 3:30 and continues until 6 PM.  The Trio demonstrated their versatility at our recent Gala, playing a wide selection of ballroom dance music from Foxtrot to Rumba to Samba to Swing with lots of Waltzes and Tangos in between.  A delight for dancers.

We're pleased to announce that dance champion Belinda Adora will return to teach the beginner lesson that starts at 2:30 PM, devoting 1/2 hour to Cha-cha and 1/2 hour to Samba.  No matter your skill level we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to learn.  Belinda is a national hero in her home country; she made sacrifices and crossed hills, dales and oceans to pursue her dreams and dance career in the US of A.  She teaches, showcases, and competes regularly out of Elegant Dancing in Fairfax, Virginia.  It's a true honor for us to have her participate at our dance tomorrow.   Later in the afternoon, Belinda and one of her students, Paul, will showcase a dance routine they've prepared for an upcoming competition.

Our dance will also feature mixers called by Master of Ceremonies Carl Pavetto, a Samba line dance or two led by Paul Tannous, and lots and lots of general dancing.  Many singles attend Ballroom Time events. Please show your support for ballroom dancing in the Park and join us tomorrow.

Sneak Peak:  We're pleased to announce that our December 10 dance will feature a return performance by the duo Go Figure!  They will be joined by vocalist and Special Guest Star Janet Paulsen, who will sing holiday favorites and selections from the Great American Songbook.  Ballroom dancers are in for a treat.

Looking ahead to 2024, we want you to be the first to know:  our January 14 dance will feature the fantastic quartet Some Assembly, who have performed a number of times at Glen Echo.  On February 11, the Djangolaya Trio will return for a Valentine's Day-themed dance, meaning every song will have "love", "amour", "amor" or the equivalent in the lyrics.  And on March 10... we know you've been waiting patiently... The Mike Surratt Trio will make a Triumphant return to the Spanish Ballroom just for you...

Ballroom Time plans to produce a Second Sunday Afternoon dance each month in 2024 along with our Second Annual Ballroom Dance Gala scheduled for October 5, 2024.  And there will be some surprises along the way, including our Special Birthday Party Dance scheduled for the afternoon of May 26.  Ballroom Time will be turning ONE!  Please note that number and mark your calendars now.

We'll be getting our website updated soon, but we wanted to let our loyal followers know about these dances before anyone else. We had over 180 dancers at our inaugural event last May... and with your help our goal is to set new attendance records this coming year.

If you haven't been there lately, please visit our Facebook page to review videos and photos from our recent events.  There's a link on our website at www.ballroomtime.org  And there's still time to order your custom Ballroom Time name tag pictured there if you haven't done so.  Just send a response to this message specifying details.

Thank you for supporting ballroom dancing at Glen Echo Park,

Happy Veterans Day to fellow veterans and to all,

Best wishes,

Tom Hall for

Ballroom Time.

To our email list of supporters:

We're one week out from the first annual Fall Ball. Already, we're looking forward to future events. Please reserve these dates: October 5, 2024 for the Second Annual Fall Ball, and October 18, 2025 for the Third Annual Fall Ball, both to be held in the historic Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park.

Over 150 of you attended last Saturday evening and feedback from dancers and our supporters has been overwhelmingly positive. If you haven't done so, please visit our Facebook page to see photos and videos from the event. The link is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/930582511552652

Please add any material you might have to the event album created by volunteer Ann Emerson, who has done a great job coordinating our Facebook presence. We're still looking for a video of Part 4 of the Foxtrot Showcase where Emanuele danced with Ricardo and Francesca with Eleonora. Everyone was pleasantly surprised, but most cameras were off in anticipation of the snowball mixer. If you have this video please forward it to info@ballroomtime.org. If we post your video on Facebook you will receive free admission to one of our Sunday afternoon dances.

Live music gala events are costly to produce. If you don't believe that please check out admission prices for some of the other events this season in the DMV region. Ticket prices in the $150-$200+ range are not unusual. While we're pleased with how the first annual Fall Ball turned out, we didn't quite reach break-even on ticket sales. We're a not-for-profit organization, but we're not for losses either. We need your ongoing support to turn Ballroom Time into a self-sustaining program. Please attend our events and encourage your friends to attend. Consider buying a ticket even if you can't/didn't attend an event. Consider purchasing Helmut Licht's poem, Dancing!  - Embossed with the Ballroom Time logo and ready for display, it makes the “perfect gift” for the special dancer in your life. Proceeds go to support Ballroom Time and to bring Helmut and his big band to the Spanish Ballroom in 2024. Our mission is to make an economical ballroom dance program available at Glen Echo Park. If you enjoy ballroom dancing there, please support our efforts any way you can.We also depend on an all-volunteer staff to make the program work. I'm pleased to announce that Amy O, who has nearly 30 years of experience dancing and volunteering in the Park, is now heading up our front-desk team of volunteers. She has prepared a handbook and trains our staff.  Thank you, Amy.  There's a lot of camaraderie on the team... if you'd like to join the fun, please send an email to info@ballroomtime.org  We especially need help towards the end of our events and with clean-up.  It's no accident that the humble push broom has become the mascot of our organization!

I'm also pleased to announce that Paul Tannous has joined our All-Volunteer Advisory Committee charged with setting the mission and direction of Ballroom Time.  Paul is an experienced dancer, takes private lessons, does showcases, and has been instrumental in getting our Beginner Lesson program underway featuring top guest instructors.  A Beginner Lesson is a Park Partnership requirement at the start of each dance event.  Paul's picture is now on our website under the Who We Are" tab. Thank you Paul.

Our next Sunday afternoon dance takes place in the Spanish Ballroom on November 12 and features the return of Djangolaya as a Trio ensemble with Jeanine Greene providing vocals: https://ballroomtime.org/November_12.html  Belinda Adora from Elegant Dancing will also return as guest instructor teaching cha-cha and samba as only she can do. Belinda will honor us with a showcase later in the afternoon. Be sure to attend.

The dance after that will be on December 10 featuring music by Go Figure! We anticipate having a surprise vocalist that afternoon to lead some holiday season favorites you'll enjoy dancing to. Stay tuned for details.

And for our many Mike Surratt fans (including me!) please don't fear. Mike will be back in the Spanish Ballroom for multiple events in 2024 starting on March 10. Please mark you calendar and visit www.mikesurratt.com

Meanwhile, we encourage everyone to take dance lessons, especially with our pros Emanuele, Francesca, Ricardo, Eleonora and Belinda.  Links to them are on our gala page here: https://ballroomtime.org/FirstGala.html   If you're new to ballroom dancing, our beginner lesson is a good way to get started and we cover two dances at each event.  Eventually, you may want to take more advanced lessons.  As we explained at the gala, even top pros take lessons. We are all learning and we can all dance better. There's also information on local venues with instructors on our More Dancing! tab.  Sign up today!

And we encourage you to attend Waltz Time dances on alternate Sundays. Ballroom Time and Waltz Time are separate organizations that cooperate on scheduling and sharing of resources and volunteers to bring economical dancing to Glen Echo Park. Waltz Time was instrumental in helping us get dance cards for our gala and in bringing in Ranger Stan to lead our promenade march. Thank you Joan and Tony and team. More information on Waltz Time dances, including the one tomorrow, can be found here: www.waltztimedances.org

look forward to seeing everyone on the dance floor soon,

Tom Hall for

Ballroom Time

PS: If you haven't gotten your free custom name tag featuring the Ballroom Time logo, please send an email to info@ballroomtime.org Please specify the spelling of your name and whether you'd like your pronouns listed. Samples are pictured on our website. If you already ordered a tag, please look for it at the front desk next time you check in...

COPY of the October 20, 2023 email update:

To our email list of supporters:

There's significant news from Ballroom Time as we prepare for The Fall Ball tomorrow evening.

First, we're delighted to announce that rising professional stars Ricardo and Eleonora, who had a first-place finish at the 2023 Emerald Ball DanceSport Championship in L.A., will be joining Emanuele and Francesca to showcase. Yes, you read that correctly. Emanuele and Francesca will be joined by Ricardo and Eleonora to showcase tomorrow evening at the Fall Ball at about 11 pm. And we've made special tickets available at the door for those who want to see the showcases but need to arrive late. Stay then for the Snowball Mixer and dance to the third set of music. Full details are on our Gala page at https://ballroomtime.org/FirstGala.html

Second, we're honored that Park Ranger Stan, an iconic figure at Spanish Ballroom dance events going back some 45 years, will be directing our promenade march that marks the start of the second set of music. Friends of Ranger Stan will not want to miss this promenade march. If you have never seen a grand march, Ranger Stan shared this video taken in 2011. https://www.facebook.com/605460239/videos/10150234354750240/

A grand march is a time for the audience to see and be seen and to connect with the orchestra. Our Promenade March will feature an optional waterfall mixer at the beginning, allowing you to join with your preferred partner, or.... to let chance/fate choose your partner for you. It should be a lot of fun. Special thanks to our friends at Waltz Time for coordinating with Ranger Stan to make this happen!

So, here's the timeline for the evening.

7:30 pm: Doors open to the public

8:00 pm: Beginner lesson in Foxtrot and Bachata with the Bachata lesson led by Latin dance champion Belinda visiting from Elegant Dancing Ballroom.

9:00 pm: First set of music by the Djangolaya Quartet begins... and the first two songs will be – you guessed it - a Foxtrot followed by a Bachata.

10 pm or a little before: The Fashion Show featuring creations by designer Francesca Lazarri begins

10:15 pm: The Promenade March, which marks the start of the second set of dance music.

11:00 pm: The Professional Showcases, which will be followed by a snowball mixer and dancing until midnight.

It's shaping up to be a most special event. The playlist looks great on the custom dance card you will receive at admission.  Or find it on our Gala page linked above.  I look forward to seeing everyone in the Spanish Ballroom tomorrow evening.

Happy dancing,

Tom Hall for

Ballroom Time

COPY of the October 13, 2023 email update:

We had good attendance at our October 8 dance featuring The Mike Surratt Duo. Over 130 dancers were there.  Photos and videos of the event are available on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/930582511552652

We now look forward to The First Annual Autumn Ballroom Dance Gala and Fashion Show, which we're referring to as the “Fall Ball”. The event will take place in the historic Spanish Ballroom in just 8 days on Saturday evening, October 21, 2023.  Our goal is to provide ballroom dancers an Evening of Excellence in music, dance, and fashion at an economical price. We want to establish precedents that will make this an annual event.

Music will be provided by The Djangolaya Quartet featuring multi-lingual vocals by Jeanine Greene. We've heard Djangolaya perform several times at Glen Echo Park and we love dancing to their music. The Quartet will be playing a selection of beautiful ballroom music representing both syllabus classes of dance - The Standard/Smooth dances: Slow Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Samba and Pasodoble; and the Latin/Rhythm Dances: Mambo, Bachata, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Swing, Hustle and more.  Please see photos and the full playlist of songs on our website here: https://ballroomtime.org/FirstGala.html

A large part of the fun is the opportunity to dance to a variety of music. Please see the FAQ section of our website for more information on how ballroom dances are classified.

A beginner lesson in Foxtrot and Bachata starts at 8:00 pm.  We're pleased to announce that Latin dance champion Belinda Adora from Elegant Dancing will lead the Bachata lesson.

Live music then plays from 9:00 pm until midnight.

There will be a mini-Fashion Show during the first intermission with modeling of the latest in ballroom attire, including haute couture creations by Francesca Lazzari just featured at the Paris and Dubai fashion weeks.  During the second intermission there will be a professional showcase featuring the Standard/Smooth dance taught during the lesson.  Former Blackpool champions Emanuele Pappacena and Francesca Lazzari, who performed at our first event on May 28, will make a return appearance in the Ballroom to dance a Foxtrot.  Continuing the tradition they started, Emanuele and Francesca will also lead a snowball mixer following their performance.

Carl Pavetto will be the guest Master of Ceremonies.  During the evening there will be a line dance and a promenade march led by Paul Tannous.  Both Carl and Paul are members of the Ballroom Time All-Volunteer Advisory Committee.

Sound engineering for the event will be provided by Jamie Platt.

LEADERS and FOLLOWERS:  A limited number of special gala dances throughout the evening MAY be available on the dance cards of our professionals.  If you'd like the honor of sharing one unforgettable Latin/Rhythm dance with Belinda, or one Standard/Smooth dream dance with Emanuele or Francesca, please send an email to  info@ballroomtime.org

And if you're wearing a designer label and would like to model in our fashion show, please contact us at the same address.  Your first name and the label will be announced from the stage.

Please join us to help establish the Fall Ball as a premier Washington gala event.  It's a dressy affair; black tie is optional. The focus is on dance and fashion in the service of dance.  So, please look your best, but make sure you're comfortable and able to move well on the dance floor.  Admission is $40 at the door (Cash /Check/Zelle/Credit Card).  Reduced admission for full-time students/active-duty military is $20. For those who wish to arrive later to see the professional showcases which start at 11:00 pm, special-priced $20 tickets go on sale at 10:45 pm.  Bottled water and light desserts will be made available in the lobby during the event.  No partner is necessary to attend Ballroom Time events. Many singles come to our dances. All ages and levels of dance are welcome. Children under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult.

Special thanks to Min Zhang for her volunteer work designing our web site at www.ballroomtime.org

Ballroom Time depends on volunteers to keep going. If you'd like to volunteer please send an email to info@ballroomtime.org Especially for the Gala we need extra help setting up at the beginning and tidying up at the end.  We need photographers and decorators.  Most importantly, we need dancers to attend. Please spread the word to your friends and support ballroom dancing in the Park. This first annual event comes with bragging rights - "I was there!"

It is not to be missed.

See you at the Fall Ball,

Happy dancing,

Tom Hall for Ballroom Time
